The Baptism of Christ

The Baptism of Christ was completed in 1475 and till today is one of the most famous paintings of all time made by Andrea del Verrocchio. Some of its parts are completed by one of his pupils and one of the greatest painter, Leonardo da Vinci.Andrea del Verrocchio was closely associated with some of his pupils such as – Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo di Credi, Botticini, Botticelli.

In this painting, one angel is remarkably better than remaining figures in the painting, and is supposed to have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The remaining figures are painted by Verrocchio and his students – Cerdi, Botticelli and others.

This painting shows the story of baptism of Christ in Jordan, by John the Baptist. Christ is shown as a rough Tuscan farmer and there are two angles kneeling next to him. Leonardo’s job was to paint one of the angels and some of the plants and mountains.

It is said that Leonardo painted that angel so nicely that Verrocchio never again wanted to raise a brush and he was humiliated at how a student could do so great work than his master. This painting is also known as last painting of Verrocchio. It is said that Verrocchio was not prolific painter, but he has mastery over other arts such as – metalwork and sculpture. Many people consider that in this painting, Leonardo’s angel looks full of life, while remaining figures in this painting look stiff as compared to Leonardo’s graceful angel. Leonardo has painted the expression of the angel’s face so delicately which shows his art of showing emotion.
